Who doesn’t love a good makeover?

by adminS2U

I’m a sucker for a good makeover story.  I used to love the makeovers in my teen magazines and then progressed to shows like What not to Wear and Trading Spaces.  I even had my own (embarrassing) make0ver story.  We were invited to a New Year’s Eve party for my husband’s boss.  It was just a simple neighborhood block party he told me.  I asked what to wear and he said just jeans and a nice top.  I was a little disappointed.  New Year’s Eve is the one day of the year where you can dress like a princess and no one cares.

We get to the party-there are about 20 other couples there-and they are dressed in formal wear.  *Sigh*  Not to worry though, I was soon whisked upstairs by the hostess who had a beautiful collection of gowns.  I ended up in a silvery number.  She even had a pair of coordinating heels in my size-which was funny since she wasn’t my shoe size at all.  It’s important to remember that this is the middle of the Winter in Minnesota-and I wasn’t planning on showing my legs or wearing a strapless dress.  I hadn’t properly prepared so I was nervously checking to see how bad the growth was when I accidentally backed up and dropped the heavy back sequined part of the dress into the toilet.  So now I had to walk down a long stair case to the party-while pretending that the back of my dress wasn’t soaking wet with toilet water and making sure to keep my arms down to avoid showing mid-winter hair growth.  I did however get a round of applause from the happy party goers-which did feel like what you might get if you were able to go on What not to wear.  I hope she doesn’t read this blog-It was a lovely dress and I had a fantastic time!

That was a long (potentially uncomfortable) story just to get to my TPT  organization makeover.  My system has been to put game cards in a plastic sandwich bag, label the bag with a sharpie-and then throw the bags into a plastic tote.  I had 6 totes stacked in my office for a period of time.  Then I switched to 3 larger plastic drawers I picked up at the Container Store.  (they fit perfectly under my desk).

Here was my old “system”:

TPT1Carly from Happily SLP was kind enough to guest blog at Speech2u last year when my mother in law was in town.  She had a great post about using index card holders to organize your TPT cards.  I’m reposting this below:

I am so honored to write a guest post for Kelly from Speech 2 U. My name is Carly and I am a second year speech –language pathologist working in Nebraska. You can follow me on facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/HappilySLP and visit my TPT store at: http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Carly-Fowler

I absolutely love teacher pay teacher materials. Since last year I was beginning my career as a Speech Language Pathologist and work in an area where there were not a lot of resources available I quickly found that the SLP community online was the way to supplement materials. Now I have so many wonderful packets that need to be organized.    Here is how I keep some of my many materials organized in my speech room.
Many of my tpt materials now reside in index card holders! I can fit many of them in a basket and with a quick look I am able to find what I am looking for.
You will need:
– Packing Tape
-Printer
-Laminator
-Index Card Holders (I got mine on clearance at a big box store for 44₵)
-Duck Tape or Labels (I have found that the labels peel off easily)
-Permanent Marker
I have found that by printing my materials multiple pages per sheet I can save on space, ink and lamination. For more information about how to print multiple pages per sheet Jenna at Speech Room News has shared a tutorial on her blog.
Once all my materials are prepped (cut and laminated) I place them in the index card holder.
As for the instructions and content pages I either use packing tape to stick them on to the outside or back of the index card holder or place them inside along with the stimulus cards.
To make the index card holders a bit nicer I have place the covers of the tpt packets on the front.
I label all the edges using a permanent marker and piece of duck tape so I know what I have in each holder.
As for the game boards that just won’t fit with this organization system, they are filed away for easy access. Not all your materials will work with this system, but this helps me store many of them in a smaller space. I hope you enjoy this organizational tip!

I can’t tell you how excited I was to see these holders when I went to a Walmart when we were on vacation.  They were on clearance for 50 cents.  You know you are a speech geek when you buy 100 plastic index card holder during your vacation.  It was worth the weird looks from my husband.  Check out the results below:

Thanks to Happily SLP, I’m now able to quickly grab TPT products to use during my sessions.  What about you?  What system have you used to organize your purchases?  Did you like this post?  If you did, I would be so grateful if you would take time to share this post on Pinterest by clicking on any of the photos on this page.

I’m doing something similar, but what you’re doing is probably cheaper!

Wish I had taken the time to look at this before I did my shopping yesterday – the bags don’t quite do it for me either, and neither do book rings. What a good idea!

Thanks for the story and the tips. I have some of my materials in index card boxes but they don’t look as nice and as organized as yours.

Also, what are those cards in the top picture that look like they have beakers on them and say “you need”?
