People still eat pumpkin pie at Christmas, right? Speech Craftivity

by adminS2U

Not only am I behind on my Thanksgiving day meal planning, but I also forgot to post my pumpkin pie activity for articulation carryover.  Hopefully you are like me and just repeat your Thanksgiving day meal on Christmas.  (and I also repeat in on Easter-but not on St. Patrick’s Day.)   Thanksgiving day dinner is too good to just have one time per year.

I saw this idea on Pinterest as a gratitude craft which is awesome.  There are some awesome ideas on this blog for Thanksgiving activities.  I love the turkey cup-but initially I thought that it was a rum cocktail.  It’s really time for me to be on break, I think.  Check it out HERE.

Articulation Pies

All you need is:

  • Paper plate
  • Brass brad
  • Orange construction paper

I cut out the circles beforehand

Step1

During our session, I had my clients practice at the word level while glueing the pictures to the plate.  It works best if you turn the pictures so the bottoms are facing towards the middle of the plate.

Step 2

After all of the pictures were added to the plate, we attached the pumpkin circle to the plate using a brass brad.  I added a carrier phrase on either side of the wedge.  We worked on carrier phrases by having them say something like, “I ate 13 pies.  Thirteen pies taste good.”

Step3

I saw this idea on Pinterest too.  I emptied a container of Cool Whip.  It is not pathetic to be sitting watching Lifetime TV and eating spoonfuls of Cool Whip if it is for a therapy activity.    Once the container was emptied I filled it with cotton balls.  After we had said our sentences, I pulled out the container and asked if anyone wanted some Cool Whip.  If they said, “Yes.”  I opened the container and yelled “COOL WHIP FIGHT”  Then we each got 5 cotton balls to throw at each other.  Immature-but super fun and motivating for my clients.  And it doesn’t hurt to get hit by a cotton ball.  I used the Cool Whip container with some other clients and just alternated drill work with Cool Whip fights.

Step4

Pumpkin pie is my favorite-but you could probably adapt this to other pies.  What kind of pie is your favorite?

Pumpkin pie at Christmas for breakfast, lunch and dinner! Then there’s pecan pie, cheesecake, fruit cake (Yes, I make a wonderful mocha fruitcake), and cookies…
