Things I LOVE: Bento boxes

by adminS2U

There are a lot of things I LOVE about being a Speech Language Pathologist. I LOVE it when I hear a client’s first word , the first time they get a sound correct (especially /r/!!!) and when I am in a CEU course and think, “Hey! I’m already doing that!” I love thinking back about when I first started-and how the things that used to be SO hard-are easier or come as second nature.  I love that even after 17 years, I am still learning.

The Frenzied SLP’s theme is LOVE for this month. I am going to talk about something else that I love: Bento boxes. Bento is a meal packed at home-usually presented in small compact containers.  My first attempt was based on a muffin tin from Another Lunch.  Bent On Better Lunches has some great ideas too.  Or I just search Pinterest for ideas.  Mostly I like to look at the creativity of others.  I think it speaks a little bit to the feeding therapist in me. I’m always trying to find new ways to present or make foods more appealing in therapy-and that has carried over into my home life as well.

Like you, I am busy. In my perfect world, I would pack a delicious and nutritious lunch for my son every day. I haven’t made bagged lunches a priority. It’s enough for me to make dinner and make my own lunch for work.  He eats school lunch-primarily peanut butter and jelly-with an occasional chicken stir fry thrown in.  Every once in awhile (about 3-4 times per year) I will pack a special “themed” lunch for him.  It’s dorky, but I think of it as contributing to the magic of childhood.

Today I packed a Valentine Day lunch.  It was pretty easy.  I made up some heart shaped raviolis and cut the tops of the strawberries off so they looked like hearts.  I cut grape tomatoes in half diagonally and then turned one side over so that they looked like hearts.   I found these cute Valentine printable jokes at Over the Big Moon.

Here is an easy one I did for Halloween last year.

Have you ever done a special lunch for your child? I’d love to hear about it below! Check out the SLP Frenzy Facebook page for some more Bento box ideas and to see what your favorite SLPs are up to.
